  • Overview

    The Behavior Support Specialist supports students who exhibit the most challenging of behaviors in modifying their behavior in order to access their education and stay in the lowest level of school placement possible. This position is also responsible for monitoring, redirecting and modifying student progress regarding maladaptive behaviors and performance, administering intensive behavior intervention programs to identified students, and performing a variety of clerical duties. Additionally, the Behavior Support Specialist provides coaching, modeling and development opportunities to school staff.

    • Work effectively with a multidisciplinary team to assess, plan and implement specialized student plans
    • Support school culture team in creating and coordinating school wide activities to build and maintain positive school climate, and support the implementation of school wide approaches to positive discipline practices
    • Form consultative relationships with school staff, including general and special educators and school leadership in order to Support Positive Behavior Intervention Systems and provide behavioral consultation and trainings through individual, classroom-wide, and school-wide coaching and professional development
    • Facilitate restorative dialogue for staff to build community and accountability across the school community
    • Lead the development, implementation and monitoring behavioral interventions for targeted students
    • Engage families in the behavior intervention plan process, and to increase school participation
    • Provide direct behavioral intervention/modification for students that decreases engagement in disruptive, harmful or negative behaviors and increases engagement in positive replacement behaviors as appropriate,
    • including student academic, social skill-building, and recreational individual and group activities
    • Oversee the implementation of effective and efficient data tracking and monitoring systems that document student progress toward goals
    • Provide direct supervision for in-class Student Support Assistants, including coordination, planning and administration of professional development, overseeing skills development and progress towards professional goals, and providing coaching and support around physical management.
    • Provide physical management of clients and implementation of Seneca’s Ahimsa Model Training as needed
    • Review/monitor IEP-related Behavior Intervention Services to ensure compliance with legally mandated minutes
    • Engage in ongoing professional learning and participation, including professional learning communities to enhance practice and create coherence, such as individual and group supervision
    • Maintain a high standard of professional behavior at all times
    • Perform all other duties as necessary for the good of the agency as requested by supervisor.


    • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Social Services/Social Work/Psychology and at least four years experience in working with children with emotional/behavioral challenges and their families
    • Experience providing crisis assessment, management, and interventions
    • Ability and willingness to work independently in the office, at school sites, and at times in the community.
    • TB test clearance, fingerprint clearances, and any other state/federal licensing or certification requirements
    • Strong written and verbal skills, including solid computer skills in Microsoft Office programs.
    • Strong organizational skills as demonstrated by the ability to effectively manage multiple tasks.
    • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, with a diverse population of clients.


    This position will be starting July 2018 

    • Monday-Friday
